Michael Whitaker Smith (born October 7, 1957) is an American musician who has charted in both contemporary Christian and mainstream charts.^[2] His biggest success in mainstream music was in 1991 when "Place in This World" hit No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Over the course of his career, he has sold more than xviii million albums.^[iii]

Early life [edit]

Michael Whitaker Smith was born to Paul and Barbara Smith in Kenova, Due west Virginia. His father was an oil refinery worker at the Ashland Oil Refinery, in nearby Catlettsburg, Kentucky. His mother was a caterer.^[9] He inherited his dear of baseball from his begetter, who had played in the minor leagues. As a child, he developed a love of music through his church. He learned pianoforte at an early age and sang in his church choir. At the age of 10, he had "an intense spiritual experience" that led to his becoming a devout Christian. After his older Christian friends moved abroad to college, Smith began to struggle with feelings of loneliness and alienation. Later graduating from loftier school, he gravitated toward alcohol and drugs.^[9] He attended Marshall University while developing his songwriting skills but dropped out after one semester. He likewise played with various local bands around Huntington, West Virginia. During that time, his friend Shane Keister, who worked every bit a session musician in Nashville, encouraged him to move to Nashville, the Country Music capital letter, and pursue a career in music.^[10]

The following year, Smith released his first all-worship music album, Worship, on September 11. This album was followed by a sequel, Worship Again in 2002. Both albums were recorded live in concert. Worship Once again likewise includes a song that Smith wrote called "There She Stands", inspired by the September 11, 2001 attacks. He performed this vocal live for the 2004 Republican National Convention,^[14] saying that President George W. Smith's album, Healing Rain, was released in 2004 and debuted at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 200 Chart. The title track rose to No. ane on the Radio & Records Charts and a music video for the song was released. The album combines the pop fashion of his previous recordings with the religious feel of his ii alive worship albums. It was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album. In 2006 he released Stand, which is like to Healing Rain (2004) in style and genre just with more Christian-themed songs. Unlike his first instrumental album, Freedom (2000), this album features a 65-piece orchestra at AIR Studios Lyndhurts Hall in London and Wildwood Recording Studio in Nashville.^[18] The following year he released his third compilation anthology, Decades of Worship (2012).

Smith'south concert in Draper, Utah, on July 24, 2012 was near canceled due to a complaint filed by a Utah resident on July xvi, 2012. He resides in the Nashville suburbs and spends time at his subcontract. Smith attended Belmont Church in Nashville, Tennessee and is mentored by its long-time pastor, Don Finto.^[51] Smith is also the founding pastor of New River Fellowship church in Franklin, Tennessee, where he was the atomic number 82 pastor from 2006 to 2008. Smith and his married woman remain involved members of the church.

Smith was a personal friend of former President George H. W. Bush-league and is a friend of his son, erstwhile President George Westward.
